Vision & Objectives
Total Wellness was established in 2001 by faculty in the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) at Texas State University-San Marcos to provide Texas State employees and residents of the San Marcos community with opportunities to improve their physical “well-being” and deepen their social connection.

- improve dietary habits
- reduce sedentary behaviors
- support social interaction
- encourage the adoption of other healthy behaviors
- increase awareness of healthy behaviors, available health resources, and the benefits of physical activity and proper nutrition
- identify cardiovascular risk factors
- improve cardiovascular health, muscular fitness, and body size/composition
- reduce stress levels
Objectives
To meet its goals, Total Wellness will:
- Offer a variety of fun, interactive, innovative, and effective group fitness classes.
- Offer personal fitness instruction that focuses on education, skill-building, and safety and will, thereby, increase exercise self-efficacy and empowers clients to exercise on their own.
- Offer health risk assessments, comprehensive fitness testing, and body size and composition assessment.
- Use the results from these assessments to help clients identify and reduce risks associated with obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other preventable diseases.
- Offer educational workshops and individualized programs that emphasize awareness, prevention, and positive health behavior change and cover basic exercise and nutritional recommendations from national organizations.
- Disseminate current and accurate wellness information, including healthy diets, weight loss opportunities, disease prevention strategies, and exercise training techniques, through the Total Wellness Web site, monthly newsletters, and weekly e-mails.
