"Having an amateur bodybuilder/special forces green beret for a father, health and fitness were an integral part of my upbringing. As a teenager, I learned the basics of weight-lifting during “family gym time” (seriously).
But until my mid-twenties, I hadn’t had much more than an occasional bout with machine weights and maybe the elliptical since high school. I’ve always watched what I ate, but had definitely grown less diligent about it, relying on service industry jobs to do the calorie burning for me. Exercise was something I did when I wasn’t too tired so I could “earn” my margarita. Not surprisingly, the weight (and my pants size) crept up.
At some point in the last few years, I ventured to one of Jenn’s Zumba classes. I’d always loved to dance but hated cardio, and so I hoped this “exercise party” would stick. It definitely did! Jenn’s energy and unique routines make me look forward to cardio, rather than resent it. I soon quit paying per class and bought the unlimited pass, adding cycling, X-fit, Step-‘n-Sculpt and RIPPED to my routine. I loved the variations, the difficulty levels, the sense of community. There were classes available no matter how much my schedule changed. I’ve had a couple of pelvic floor surgeries that set me back, but both times I was counting down the days until I was allowed to return to TW!
One thing I’ve learned is that fitness isn’t necessarily reflected on a scale, and less is not always more. For example, I currently weigh 164 – not a far cry from the 170 I was in first photo, but according to Total Wellness’s BodPod measurements, those numbers represent about a 16-lb fat loss and about a 10-lb muscle gain, achieved through a cleaner diet, TW classes, and some heavy lifting on the side. However, I worry less these days about the number on the scale and worry more about reps, sets, time and distance. My body definitely looks different, but it can also do a whole lot of things it couldn’t before. I feel confident and able – two of the less obvious side effects of fitness.
I can honestly say that Total Wellness played a crucial role in helping me launch back into, and maintain, my fitness. Having a place to go where I knew I would be pushed, where I couldn’t cheat myself or make excuses, and where I felt comfortable and welcome was absolutely instrumental. Every time Melanie gets tough with us, or Josh forgets how to count, or Jenn sings along with the songs, I’m reminded of how much I owe Total Wellness, and how much I’ll miss you all when I move away this fall. Thanks again."
Total Wellness began over ten years ago, Carolyn Clay and Lisa Lloyd envisioned Total Wellness as a program that would contribute to overall health and wellness of the faculty and staff of Texas State University. Total Wellness expanded its program to the San Marcos Activity Center in 2010, making it available to all members of the community. In the fall of 2012, Total Wellness continued its expansion and started offering group exercise classes at San Marcos schools. Total Wellness continues to grow as promoter of health and wellness. They now offer a range of services from group exercise, personal traning, summer camps, weight loss consultations, and everything in between. Whatever your fitness goals are, Total Wellness can help you!
