Still notice a difference in flavor? Try these suggestions:
Use fresh herbs and spices. Fresh herbs and spices generally have a stronger flavor than their dried counterparts. Mince or process garlic, rosemary, sage, thyme, and/or cilantro for a fresh flavor combination. Squeeze fresh lemon or lime over a finished dish to create a tart and tangy citrus finish.
Use strong spices. For example, use taco or fajita seasonings to flavor ground turkey, and then serve it with veggies in corn tortillas, with beans, over a salad, or over a bed of brown rice. For a seasoning blend that is lower in sodium, try Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime seasoning. Use chipotle and chili seasonings to bring some heat and smokiness to your dish.
Cook in or serve with sauces. Try simmering seasoned turkey meatballs in tomato sauce and tossing with veggies and whole-wheat pasta. Brown ground tofu for use in chili or stuffed peppers.
Give ground chicken a try too. Although it is usually not offered in the meat department, most butchers will grind up some chicken breasts for you if you ask!
Finally, a great way to add protein to your meals is to eat more beans. Beans are full of fiber, protein, and magnesium, and have no cholesterol and virtually no saturated fat, so they’re a great replacement for that beef. Beans of all kinds work well in soups, salads, veggie burgers, dips, and (of course) burritos!
This is the annual fundraising event for the San Marcos Runners Club; the proceeds will support SMRC projects and activities that promote exercise, fitness and healthy lifestyles in our community. The SMRC organizes and manages race events at no charge for many local nonprofit organizations in their fundraising efforts, and uses these proceeds to cover the expenses involved; so your donation ultimately benefits those groups.
