"Variety is the spice of life", as the saying goes. But how does it affect our eating habits?
Research shows that people tend to consume significantly more when offered a variety of choices. As an example, participants in a study who were served three flavors of yogurt ate more than those served only one flavor, even if the one flavor served was their favorite! The theory behind this is a phenomenon called "sensory-specific satiety", which explains the relationship between our sensory experience of food and our appetite. New flavors, colors, and textures spark our hunger anew, which can make overeating at a buffet, for instance, very easy to do!
The good news is that you might be able to use this phenomenon to your advantage. By increasing the variety of healthy foods at each meal, such as fresh vegetable options, you can also increase your overall consumption of them by keeping your appetite stimulated with lower calorie, nutrient-dense foods! By choosing to surround yourself with these foods in a variety of colors and textures, you'll be more likely to satisfy yourself with them.
So make variety work for you! Avoid the buffet, and try hitting the farmer's market instead! Serve up a rainbow of healthful foods to engage the senses and nourish the body and mind!

"I'm too tired to exercise."
We've all heard it. Maybe you've even said it! But you might be surprised to hear what science has to say about it...
You're probably familiar with the rumor that exercise can actually increase your energy level. What you may not know is that researchers at the University of Georgia set out to determine just how true that rumor was, and their results were impressive! After analyzing 70 different studies, they found that 90% of the time, regular exercise improved participants' fatigue. Not bad, eh? It gets better!
Among the studies' participants were healthy individuals, those with chronic diseases, and even cancer patients. The effects of exercise on fatigue were consistent....regular exercise boosts energy! In fact, physical activity was found to be MORE effective than pharmaceutical stimulants! How on earth does expending energy give you more? Even short periods of exercise significantly increase energy-boosting neurotransmitters. It really works! No more skipping your favorite class because you're "too tired", get out there and boost those brain chemicals!
And before you reach for that 5-hour Energy, try squeezing in a quick work out instead...you might find you don't need it!
