Pack some fresh fruit, keep a jar of your favorite nut butter at your desk, or grab a yogurt on the way out. Try combining items to make a less boring version of your favorite snack:
- Spread 1 tbsp. of peanut or almond butter over banana or apple slices
- Add a few tablespoons of your favorite low-sugar granola to some nonfat, plain or vanilla yogurt (plus lots of fruit!)
- Have a slice of whole wheat bread with a slice of cheese and your favorite meat
- Dip pretzels or veggie sticks into some hummus or yogurt sauce (see recipe below)
Make your own hummus using your favorite bean! Typically, hummus is made using chickpeas. But, you can easily make your own hummus using your favorite bean by draining and pureeing one low-sodium can of beans with 1 garlic clove, 2 tablespoons each lemon juice and tahini, and 1 teaspoon cumin; add water as needed to reach desired consistency. Try black beans, white beans, or edamame.
Limit your serving to about 1 oz. of hummus.
How can you sit less? Stand up at least once per hour, more if you can remind yourself to do so. Standing still is better than sitting. Make your workspace less convenient so that you have to stand up to reach the printer or your telephone or any office tool you use frequently. Stand up when your telephone rings or when someone comes into your office. Hold standing or walking meetings. Take frequent walks during the day. Park further away from your office so that you get in a nice walk before and after work. Do whatever you can to sit less and move more.
Zach takes you through a couple of back exercises using weight machines.
