There are numerous benefits of exercise, including reduced risk of cardiovascular and neurological disease, reduced stress, better sleep, increased energy...but one thing that it cannot do alone is cancel out unhealthy food choices. Physical activity certainly burns more calories! But many of our "treats" have more calories than we can realistically burn in an hour or so of exercise. For example, you'd have to run a half-marathon to outdo just one serving of Chili's Molten Chocolate Cake!
So what does that mean for us when we've overindulged? It means we stay on track with our work outs, and focus on making the next choice a better one! One misstep isn't enough to take us off of the path to wellness, so stay positive, and remember: EVERY CHOICE COUNTS!
Plan ahead for situations that you find threatening to healthy behaviors. Think about the situation and make a plan for how you can manage it in a way that works for you. For example, if you are in the habit of going to a group exercise class and you are planning a vacation and won't have access to the class, find out what opportunities exist to be physically active at your vacation destination. Remember, walking is a great way to be physically active and walking is a great way to discover a new place. Don't get caught unprepared - think ahead to ensure you can achieve your goals!
